New Food Guidelines Call for 400-600mg of Flavanols Daily

Big news! New dietary guidelines issued by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommend consuming 400 to 600 mg/day of flavanols to improve cardiometabolic health!

“Increasing consumption of dietary flavanols may help improve blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar,” manuscript authors wrote. “A continuously growing body of research demonstrates higher consumption may reduce the risk of certain cardiometabolic disease and related mortality.”

An expert panel of practitioners and researchers, appointed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, developed the recommendation after reviewing results from 157 randomized controlled studies and 15 cohort studies. The target group for the guidelines is the general adult population.

The guidelines did not assess potential benefits of flavanols on brain function or full body performance but that may come later. Based on the data, it would not be surprising if future recommendations around brain function were associated with even higher flavanol consumption guidance.

The panel recommended people meet the new guideline by consuming more foods rich in flavanols such as tea, apples, and, of course, dark chocolate and cocoa:).
